ABOUT US

A GROUP OF LOCALS WHO SHARE A GREAT PASSION FOR OCEAN

You will find us all, every morning, enjoying the magic of the rising sun

Friends of Kurrawyba

The "Friends of Kurrawyba" evolved in December 2023 from a group of local swimmers and ocean lovers who meet on Terrigal beach each morning to swim and enjoy the natural beauty under and above the ocean's surface. We've held many passionate discussions about ways to spread ocean conservation awareness and education. The group is currently focusing on seeking community support to remove shark nets from our beaches and in having the area declared by the NSW Government as a 'no take' aquatic reserve. The primary objective of aquatic reserves in NSW is to conserve the biodiversity of fish and marine vegetation.

We are not anti-fishing.

Marine sanctuaries provide a refuge for fish from being caught, allowing them to aggregate freely, grow large, and reproduce. Sanctuaries play a significant role in keeping balance within marine ecosystem, and providing a safe environment for threatened and endangered species. Marine sanctuaries increase abundance of sea life and cause a spill-over effect, which provides abundance of marine life in adjacent waters that are open to fishing.

We believe that with small steps, working together, we can pass on the wisdom and value of wildlife to younger generations, to create a place where coexistence with wild animals is respected, understood and protected by everyone.
